The Foreign Correspondent: Connecting Chicago and the World
with
John Maxwell Hamilton, dean and LSU Foundation Hopkins P. Breazeale Professor at the Manship School of Mass Communication, Louisiana State University
Richard C. Longworth, senior fellow, The Chicago Council on Global Affairs
As globalization and new media make the flow of news across national boundaries immediate and voluminous, the role of foreign correspondents as mediators between foreign realities and the public becomes a critical aspect of how journalism serves the public interest. Edward Price Bell invented the job of foreign correspondent when he opened the London bureau of the Chicago Daily News in 1900. His autobiography, describing the birth of the profession of foreign correspondents, seeks to illuminate how effective correspondence was in providing Chicago’s readers with previously inaccessible information. Bell’s story, however, lay unpublished in the Newberry Library until John Maxwell Hamilton edited and published it as part of a series of memoirs and books by pioneering foreign correspondents. Richard C. Longworth, prize-winning Chicago Tribune foreign correspondent for twenty years, will join Professor Hamilton for a conversation about how the role of the foreign correspondent has changed, and about Chicago’s unique place in global media.
Cosponsored with The Newberry Library.
