The Global Edge: Increasing Chicago's Global Engagement

with panelists Paul O’Connor, former executive director, World Business Chicago; John Livingston, managing partner, McKinsey & Company; John Murray, chief of bid operations, Chicago 2016 Olympics office

Moderated by Michael Moskow, vice chairman and senior fellow on the Global Economy, The Chicago Council on Global Affairs

This second program in the three-part series will address Chicago’s global engagement. In the twenty-first century, global cities engage with the world at all levels. The global perception of Chicago, however, does not match its global reality. The city has become one of the urban powers of the global era and yet visitors are often surprised at how much Chicago really has to offer. From the way City Hall deals with the outside world to tourism promotion that barely leaves the Midwest, Chicago seems to have to reintroduce and reexplain itself in a way that other global cities do not. This program will feature an expert panel addressing the role of government and institutions, the city’s branding and marketing, and leveraging the media to engage Chicago on the global level.

Michael MoskowMichael Moskow was named senior fellow for the global economy at The Chicago Council on Global Affairs in September 2007. For the prior thirteen years, he was the eighth president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Dr. Moskow’s career includes service in the public and private sectors as well as academia. In 1991, President George H. W. Bush appointed Dr. Moskow deputy United States trade representative with the rank of ambassador. He sits on the boards of numerous organizations including The Chicago Council on Global Affairs, the National Bureau of Economic Research, the Council on Foreign Relations, and World Business Chicago.

Paul O’Connor is the former executive director of World Business Chicago. At Mayor Richard M. Daley’s request in 1999, he left corporate marketing to create World Business Chicago. Previously, he was a journalist in Chicago and Seattle and the head of international and economic development in the Illinois Department of Commerce. He is now a senior consultant at The Chicago Council on Global Affairs for the Global Midwest Forum.

John Livingston is managing partner of the Chicago office for McKinsey & Company. He joined McKinsey in 1993 and has helped the firm open offices in South Africa and Southeast Asia. He is a board member of The Chicago Council on Global Affairs and of the Civic Consulting Alliance, which supports city departments with strategic and operational issues.

John Murray is the chief of bid operations for the Chicago 2016 Olympics office. He has been a member of the Chicago 2016 since its inception, and is responsible for day-to-day bid operations and coordination of resources. Until now, John has been on executive loan from McKinsey & Company, where he was a consultant in the firm’s Chicago office.

The Global Edge: An Agenda for Chicago's FutureIn October 2007, The Chicago Council released a Study Group report on Chicago’s global future, led by cochairs Michael Moskow, former president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and senior fellow for the global economy at The Chicago Council on Global Affairs; Henry Perritt, Jr., professor at Chicago-Kent College of Law; and Adele Simmons, vice chair and senior executive at Chicago Metropolis 2020. The Study Group brought together more than forty representatives of the city’s civic and business leadership to define the issues and set an agenda on how Chicago can compete and thrive as a first-tier global city. This three-part series will feature each cochair moderating a local, expert panel on the three key priorities of the report: infrastructure, human capital, and global engagement.
